September in Mexico is dedicated to our country and is known as "Mes de la Patria"/"Month of our Homeland" as we celebrate our Independence in September 16th. Mexicans around the world also celebrate with different festivals and cultural activities, as this is an opportunity to showcase our Mexican arts and culture.
Cinco de Mayo (May 5th.) the Mexican celebration of the May 5th Battle of Puebla in 1862 is becoming more popular in Vancouver, mainly as a way to party in different bars and restaurants, but it is also an opportunity to learn about Mexico trought their authors.
The Vancouver Public Library has a vast selection of books both in English and Spanish by great Mexican authors and also about Mexican artists like: Carlos Fuentes, Carlos Monsiváís, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Octavio Paz, Elena Poniatowska, José Emilio Pacheco, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Jean A. You can hold these books online and pick them up at the Vancouver Public Library branch closes to you.
