Members of the Mexican Community gathered at the Vancouver City Hall today September 16th, 2013 to attend the City of Vancouver Proclamation "Mexican Independence Day" ceremony.

Proclamation
"MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY"
WHEREAS Heritage and traditions enrich our lives, and their manifestations help to educate and promote understanding among diverse cultures and peoples;
AND WHEREAS The Mexican community of Vancouver and throughout British Columbia make valuable contributions to our multicultural society, in business, the arts, academia, science and other fields;
AND WHEREAS Mexico is both proudly Latin American and a natural North American partner of Canada;
AND WHEREAS The 203rd Anniversary of Mexican Independence commemorates the day when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called on those opposed to slavery and bad government to join the "cause" for freedom;
AND WHEREAS Citizens of Mexico and those of Mexican heritage throughout the world join to mark this Anniversary with civic and festive celebrations to strengthen their unity and cultural pride:
NOW. THEREFORE, I, Gregor Robertson, Mayor of the City of Vancouver, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM Monday, September 16th, 2013 as

"MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY"

Vancouver Mexico Vivo Folklore ballet
México Vivo Folklore and Salsa is a Vancouver based ballet with a repertoire that features a wide range of musical genres of the different regions of México such as Chiapas, Michoacán, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Jalisco, Nayarit and Yucatán.

México Vivo Folklore and Salsa was founded by the ballet’s director Maria Hillmer in 2001. Maria a native of México City has an extensive background in Mexican Folklore dances and choreography. Maria passion for dance and mentoring has laid a successful group formed by talented adults and children who share their love and passion of dancing.


The ballet has been honored and privileged to perform at many festivals in Greater Vancouver trough the years including Canada Day celebration, the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), The Kitsilano Showboat, Langley International Festival, MexicoFest-Mexican Independence Day celebration in Vancouver, Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations in Vancouver organized by UBC and the Vancouver Public Library, Viva Vancouver and Latino Soy. 
The group has also toured in Alberta and Victoria BC participating at the Victoria Day Parade, The Mexican Canadian Community Association of Victoria and other events.


Mexico Vivo also performed at Robson Square for the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in 2010, and at The Orpheum Theatre along Mexican famous Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán considered the best Mariachi band in the world.
