ZYRYAB - 8th Annual Jondo Festival - Vancouver
The 8th Annual Jondo festival is being celebrated in Vancouver. We attended last night ZYRYAB concert, a fusion of Flamenco and Persian Musical Traditions. It was a beautiful concert with flamenco and sama dances, songs in Spanish and Persian, music combining the flamenco guitars and instruments like the Setar and drums. We were also introduced to Rumi's poetry by Dr. Mendi Meshgini. ZYRYAB was the opening event of the Annual Jondo Festival, which runs until May 25.

Cinco de Mayo in Vancouver

Cinco de Mayo in Vancouver - Gala Piano Concert by Musician and composer Ezequiel S. Barrera at UBC School of Music
Cinco de Mayo (May 5th. ) the Mexican celebration of the May 5th Battle of Puebla in 1862, which this year commemorates 150 years  is becoming more popular in Vancouver. Mainly seen as just a date to party in different bars and restaurants is also an opportunity to show cultural and artistic events from Mexico.
We had the chance to attend the extraordinary gala piano concert by the Mexican musician and composer considered also a virtuoso Ezequiel S. Barrera.
Ezequiel captivated the audience with his interpretation of compositions by Isaac Albeniz, Johanes Brahms, Canadian composer Alexander Rapoport, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce and he also performed works of his own creation.
This concert was presented by the Consulate General of Mexico and UBC - School of Music at the Roy Barnett Recital Hall.

One of the best places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo is Las Margaritas Restaurant in Kitsilano. Every year Las Margaritas organizes a very good celebration with prizes, demonstrations of different Tequila brands and Mexican beers. Vancouver based Mariachi Los Dorados also performs there every year and they really put the Mexico like environment.

Las Margaritas Restaurant is one of the sponsors of the Vancouver International Tequila Expo next Saturday May 12th at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

As a side note, today Cincode Mayo Mario Gutierrez a MexiCan  (Mexican Canadian) resident of Vancouver for six years has won the 2012 Kentucky Derby.

150 Anniversary of the Cinco de Mayo Battle of Puebla in 1862

This year we celebrate in Mexico the 150 anniversary of the Battle of Puebla "Batalla de Puebla", also known as "Batalla del Cinco de Mayo" Batle of Cinco de Mayo.

5 de Mayo History -
From Wikipedia Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla,[1][2][3][4] where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla).[5][6][7] The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride,[8] and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.[9] In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[2][10] Contrary to widespread popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is actually celebrated on September 16
