Mexican Day of the Dead Celebrations in Vancouver 2012

The Indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead was inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritageof Humanity.

Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations also include artistic and cultural events that try to preserve the traditions and costumes. In Vancouver we also have some of the traditional Mexican celebrations of the dead organized by the Mexican Communities and artists of Vancouver, and also we have not typical  Mexican celebrations, but with an strong influence with its elements and characteristics as in "All Souls" celebration at the Mountain View Cemetery; this one includes in its events a very popular Mexican Sugar Skulls workshop. Other event where there are always Mexican sugar skulls is the popular Parade of Lost Souls.

Mexican Art Exhibit and a traditional Day of the Dead altar to honor Artists and Mexican Idols. The art exhibition will include art works related with the tradition and culture of the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico.

Casa Meshiko invites to make a Day of the Dead altar and post a picture of it in their Facebook. People will vote for the best. "Buen Café" coffee shop located at 2350 West 4th. Ave. has set up a beautiful traditional Mexican Day of the Dead altar   at one of the front display windows. It has Mexican sugar skulls, papel picado, cempasúchil (marygolds),  pan de muerto (Day of the Dead bread), photos of the deceased to whom the altar is dedicated, and their favorite food: mole, tamales, tacos dorados (fried tacos), candles, drinks: beer, Buen Gusto coffee.

  • Tamales de Frjol y mole verde / Stuffed bean tamales with a delicious green mole sauce slathered on top.... Yummy! I am looking forward to try this one......
  • Red mole with rice and beans
  • Dulce de Calabaza / This is a very traditional dessert for this celebration in Mexico prepared with pumpkin cooked with "piloncillo" (Mexican raw sugar syrup), cinnamon  and spices.
  • Churros
  • Hot Mexican Chocolate

The restaurant also set a Day of the Dead altar in honor of Doña Cata their grandmother.

MexicoFest Fiesta Independence the annual Festival to celebrate Mexican Independence was held at Jack Poole Plaza on Sep. 8th. Different artists either local and from Mexico performed at this festival including a great performance by recognized "Ballet Mexcaltitán" from Nayarit, Los Claxons, Yam, Mariachi Estrella de México, and local artists Mexico Vivo, Sangre Morena, Joaquín Ernesto, Flamenco Rosario Ancer, Zumba BC and Nahualli Folklore.   

Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit were featured in this year MexicoFest from Sep 1st to 16h that included "Portraits of Mexico" and "Huichol" Art exhibitions, and culinary week in different restaurants and a golf tournament.
