Manuel Álvarez Bravo (Feb 4 1902 - Oct 19 2002) considered the most important photographer of Mexico was born 110 years ago.
The
Vancouver Art Gallery includes on its permanent collection some of his important photographs including the famous "Los Agachados". Some of them were also exhibited as part of
The Colour of My Dreams: The Surrealist Revolution in Art.
His work was recognized by Andre Breton, the
father of the Surrealist Movement, who asked him to photograph a cover
for a Surrealists Catalogue. That photograph is "
La Buena FamaDurmiendo" (The Good Reputation Sleeping) which never made it to the cover
because of the full-frontal nudity.
